聞き終わったら、

『その爺さんが本当に善人であるなら、傘を売りに行く途中に傘を地蔵にあげたはず。
この爺さんは、傘が売れなかったから、帰り道に地蔵に傘をあげただけ。本当に
地蔵を思うなら、行く途中で傘をあげるべき。善人でもなんでもない。』

と言い放った。

この出来事を家来から聞いた宇喜多直家は、にわかに顔色を変えたといわれている。
